8 Easy Ways to Increase your Air Conditioner Efficiency

In the DIY spirit?

These 8 easy steps will get your Air Conditioner running up to the best of it’s ability!

  1. Get 8-10% more efficiency out of your system simply by hosing off your outdoor A/C unit! Dust and debris can coat the fins of the outdoor unit which leads to poor heat exchange. Don’t use a pressure washer as you don’t want to damage any of the fins.
  2. The larger of the two copper lines coming out of your home to your outdoor unit should be insulated and wrapped. When your A/C is running, the unwrapped portions should be very cold… but not freezing. If the pipe is not cool to the touch, there may be an issue. Use a pipe wrap from your hardware store to insulate the larger pipe.
  3. Change your air filter! Increasing air circulation will make your system THRIVE! Seems simple enough, but it is the NUMBER 1 killer of efficiency.
  4. Open all of your registers and open all of your doors! Circulate ALL of the air in your home to reduce hot zones. Keeping them closed and creating hot pockets of air will make your home heat up faster as soon as your A/C turns off.
  5. Consider replacing aging thermostats with a new digital programmable one. According to EnergyStar.gov homeowners can save about $180 a year by changing thermostats to a new, digital, programmable thermostat and maintaining those settings.
  6. Have the refrigerant checked. Being off by a few ounces can decrease the performance. This is the one step that homeowners cannot do. It is actually illegal to tamper with, add, or replace refrigerant in your air conditioner unless you are certified by the EPA.
  7. Clear shrubs/debris/other away from your outdoor unit. Let the air flow around the unit! Pretty simple!
  8. Use all of the fans that you own! Get air flowing in your home to even out the temps and minimize hot spots. In addition, air that is circulated feels cooler than air that is stagnant.
